November 21, 1907 DROWNED AT LAKE CITY Verne Williams went Through Ice BODY BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL Verne Williams, a former Lake Odessa boy and well known here, was drowned at Lake City Saturday while skating on two-inch ice which gave way with him and his companion Will Dassamer. Several others were in the party and hurried to bring a boat to the relief, but as the boats had to break their way through the ice it was impossible to reach the spot in time to save Williams, who became exhausted and went down. It will be remembered that the Williams family formerly lived in the east end of town, moving from here about five years ago. Verne was the oldest boy and was a young man of good habits, well liked by his associates. Deceased was about 24 years of age and leaves a wife. He carried $1,000 in the Woodmen. The body was brought here Tuesday night and the funeral was held from the U.B. church yesterday afternoon.
