Samuel Wilson, Esq., an old resident of Saranac, died very suddenly on Thursday morning of last week. And the sad event, coming so unexpectedly, has cast a deep gloom over the people of this community. Mr. Wilson was born in Oneida county, New York, on the 4th day of April in the year 1802. Removing to this State twenty six years ago, he selected and settled upon a farm which now constitutes a part of the site of this village. At that time the interior of Michigan was in an exceedingly primitive state, there being but three houses in what is now the thriving village of Saranac. Then a wide and trackless forest spread over many miles in extent, together with many trials and hardships peculiar to pioneer life, were the stern and forbidding prospects with which he and others had to content. These he has by his labor and industry helped to remove and convert into a land abounding in wealth and prosperity, surrounded by all the conveniences and improvements of today, for the benefit and enjoyment of the generation which has grown up around him. He has during this time made a comfortable property, has always been a resident of this place, and by his integrity and uprightness as a man, his industry and perseverance as a citizen, and his many intrinsic virtues, he has merited and won the respect, esteem and confidence of all who knew him. He had always enjoyed good health, hardly ever been confined to his house by sickness, but on Tuesday evening, that last week, he was suddenly stricken by conjestive fever and was wholly unconscious until his death, which occurred a few minutes past midnight on the 70th anniversary of his birthday. And thus just as he had lived the time which is usually allotted to man, he crossed the deep river and passed from a world of darkness into a bright and unending eternity.
