Wilson was a resident of Sebewa he was a deputy under Sheriff Wm. Toan and was counted as a brave officer. His bravery came near causing his death 20 years ago. Walter Dann lived on a farm near Sebewa Corners and Riley Wilson was ordered to take possession of the wheat which Dann was threshing. News of this reached Dann and he sent word to Wilson that if he touched his wheat he never would leave the farm alive. Knowing Dann to be a desperate fellow, Wilson armed himself with a 38-caliber gun and walked up to the wheat. He had no sooner loaded a bag on his shoulder than Dann fired. Then Wilson fired and the two men emptied the five chambers of their revolvers at each other. The men who were working around the machine were horrified at the duel and lost no time in getting out of range. When it was all over both men lay upon the ground within reaching distance of each other. Both were alive, but one man had 2 bullets in him and the other had 3. It was feared both would die, but Dann lived to serve a term in prison, and was finally pardoned. Riley Wilson was never the athlete that he was before the shooting and he carried at least one of the bullets when they laid him in his grave last week at Ionia.
