The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Thursday, August 4, 1955


One more death was added to the Ionia count highway fatality list early 
Thursday morning when a Muir man met his death one and one-half miles north of 
Ionia on M-66.

One other, a resident of the village of Muir, is in the Ionia County Memorial 
Hospital seriously injured.  Killed almost instantly was Ernest Winans, 48.  
Injured and in the hospital is Loyal Rounds, 29.

Although there were no actual witnesses to the one car accident it is believed 
to have occurred about 2:45 a.m.  The car struck a tree head-on just north of 
the farm residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Vogt.  They did not hear the crash 
but heard other cars screeching to a halt shortly afterwards.  Clarence Hafner, 
who lives just south of the scene on the opposite side of the road, said Mrs. 
Hafner heard the car coming up the road and also heard it hit the tree.  

Tire marks on the east shoulder of the road indicated the car left the pavement 
some distance back.  The two men were traveling north in a comparatively new 
car.  Passing motorists under the supervision of Dale Kauffman, coroner; 
Sheriff Peter Van Vleck and Deputy Herman Smith worked for a half hour before 
either of the occupants of the car could be removed.  Rounds was lying on the 
ground with his one foot caught inside of the car.  He was on the driver’s side 
of the vehicle which belonged to him.  

Rounds was employed on the day shift at the Ionia Manufacturing Co.  Winans 
worked at the Lyons elevator.

Hospital officials said early Thursday morning that Rounds was suffering from a 
fractured knee and right leg, lacerations of the knee and forehead.  His 
condition was given as satisfactory.  

Ernest Winans was married 11 years ago to Florence Stewart of Lyons.  He is 
survived by his wife.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from Shaw-Rivett in Muir.  
Burial will be in Muir cemetery.
