He was born in Ionia, the son of Dr. Clarence G. and Helen (Eddy) Winchell of Ionia. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1939 and the University of Michigan, where he received his undergraduate degree and his medical degree. During World War II he served as doctor in the Panama Canal area. He was the former chief of staff at the University of Minnesota Hospital. He developed the first heart catheter at the University of Minnesota in the 1950s. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Carlson) Winchell; two daughters, Susan Fischer of Princeton, Minn. and Margaret Winchell of Lawrence, Kan.; one son, Kevin Winchell of Minnetonka; two sisters, Leah Christensen of Montgomery, Mich. and Louise VanDalen of Midland, Mich.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Fleda Stout of Ionia and one brother, Dr. Horace Winchell of Ionia. Funeral services and visitation have already been held.
