Berlin Young Man Drowns
George, the 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Winegar, of Berlin, was 
drowned in the river at Saranac last Friday afternoon, while in bathing with 
two companions, all of who could swim. Young Winegar went to Saranac to get 
a  horse shod, intending to drive back immediately after to attend a picnic. 
While the horse was being shod he went with two other boys to the river. His 
two companions swam across the river and he followed. When nearly across the 
boys ask him if he could make it, and he answered that he couldn't and 
immediately disappeared under the water not coming up again. The boys with 
him hastened up town and gave the alarm and the river bank was soon lined 
with people searching for the body which was not found until an hour and a 
half after he had disappeared beneath the waters. The remains were taken to 
the home of the boys parents. The funeral was held from the Berlin center 
church, and the remains interred in the Saranac cemetery. The two boys with 
the unfortunate lad were both much younger than he, and unable to help him 
in any way.  The water where he went down was not very deep, and but a few 
feet farther would of taken him into water shallow enough to stand up in. 
The examination conducted afterwards by the doctors proved that the boy's 
death was not due to drowning, as there was no water in him, but instead 
when taken out of the water his right hand was clutched over his heart. The 
over exertion and the fear that he could not swim out is thought to have 
brought about a difficulty with  his heart that ended his life.
