Wines was found by his wife and daughter in the family car in the garage shortly after the women had heard the report of a gun. The rifle lay at his side. Several months ago he suffered a stroke and subsequent poor health is believed to have resulted in his act. From the Ionia Sentinel-Standard - July 23, 1928: Edwin Wines, 75, who has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Marshall of Keene, for three years, attempted suicide by shooting himself through the head Monday morning at 10 o’clock. Mrs. Wines and daughter heard a rifle report and went into the yard to investigate and found him lying in the car with the rifle close by with a which he had attempted to take his own life. A Saranac doctor was called and ordered the man taken to Blodgett hospital. Mr. Wines has been in poor health several years and it is thought that despondency caused his act. According to the family he has acted strangely for several days. His condition is considered grave.
