Mr. Winright disappeared on January 4th, and since then the river has been searched almost daily, and a professional diver from Detroit spent two days in the search. Saturday night the Commonwealth and Wagar dams held up the water, and the Lyons lighting plant opened up their wheel to draw the head, and a thorough search was to be made. Shortly after dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Burger were dragging the river with a pike pole from a boat, when the body was fastened into. The location was near the middle of the river, a short distance above where the first hole was cut through which the diver worked. The body was taken to the home of Mr. Burger, and later to the undertaking rooms of A.E. Bradt in this village. The body was in good condition considering the length of time it had been in the river. Mr. Burger announces that the reward offered for the recovery of the body will be turned over to the widow of the drowned man. John E. Winright was born at Sand Lake, Kent county, Mich., March 15, 1891. Later the family lived at Pierson and Morley. On January 31, 1914, he was married to Bessie Shepard at Honor. Four years ago they moved to Lyons where the father’s family had previously come. Two children have been born to them, and their home life was very happy. January 4th of this year, while attempting to cross the river, his boat was caught in the floating ice and he perished at the age of 27 years. Besides the wife and children, he leaves a father and mother, four brothers, Frank, Lavern, James and Louis of this vicinity; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Sanford of Morley and Nettie Winright of Lyons. Funeral services were held at the father’s home, southeast of town, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G.A. Brown. Interment in Lyons cemetery.
