Winslow, 79, G.A.R. Vet, Died Friday Easton Man Served in Civil War and in Mexico; Funeral Sunday in Charge of Borden Post, G.A.R. Nathan Winslow, 79 a veteran of the Civil war, died at the home on Harriet street at 5 o’clock Friday morning. Though Mr. Winslow had been ill for a long time his condition was not considered dangerous until Thursday evening, and his death followed a few hours later. Mr. Winslow was born in Easton township, February 19, 1846. His mother died when he was eight years of age and his only sister died shortly afterwards. When Nathan was 12 years of age his father moved on a farm in section 14. The land was unimproved and the father had to build a log house in the woods. They lived here until the Michigan reformatory was established here. They then moved to a farm in Berlin township, but sold out a few years later and returned to Ionia. Mr. Winslow left home at the age of 14 years and worked as a farm hand for Simon Welch for four years. Mr. Winslow’s war record began when he was 18 years of age, February 23, 1864. He enlisted with Company D, Third Michigan Cavalry of Veteran Volunteers and remained in the service until February 12, 1866. Mr. Winslow was in New Orleans when Lincoln was assassinated. Later the regiment was sent to Mexico to help dispose of Maxmilian. He was in Texas from August 2, 1865 to February 15, 1866. He proved to be an efficient soldier and received his honorable discharge February 12, 1866 at San Antonio, Tex. He had an eventful voyage from Galveston across the gulf to New Orleans, thence up the Mississippi to Cairo, Ill. Following the war Mr. Winslow continued to work as a farm hand in Ionia county until 1872. At that time he took the money he had saved and purchased 40 acres in Easton township of unimproved land which he cleared and put under cultivation and later bought about 20 acres adjoining. In 1873 he was united in marriage to Anna Hoover, who, though born in Oakland county, had lived in Danby township since her childhood. Mrs. Winslow died April 6, 1888 when the two children were small. On November 21, 1889 he married Eva Simington, of Saranac. Besides his widow Mr. Winslow is survived by two children, Herbert Winslow and Mrs. Charles Conner, of Ionia, two brothers, L.L. Winslow and Byron Winslow, of Saranac, and four grandchildren, Mrs. Warren Bensted, Mrs. Royal Hawley, Mrs. Sam Edwards, and Mrs. Irma Winslow, all of Ionia. The funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon at the residence at 2:30 and will be in charge of the William H. Borden Post, G.A.R. of which Mr. Winslow was a member at the time of his death. Burial will take place in the family lot at the Easton cemetery.
