Ionia Sentinel-Standard - Tues. April 13, 2010

Nellie K. Witherspoon, 93, of Ionia, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2010.

She was born on Aug. 11, 1916, in Saginaw County, the daughter of Fred and Mary 
(McDonagh) Leach. Mrs. Witherspoon was a graduate of Montrose High School Class 
of 1935 and attended General Motors Institute in Flint to become a Comptometer 
Operator, during the infamous strike at GM in 1936. Nellie had been active for 
many years with both the First United Methodist Church Circle, The Girl Scouts 
of America, and as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She worked as a florist in Saginaw, 
during the Depression, raised a family, cared for her husband in his declining 
years, and loved seeing the new generations arrive. Her passion in life was 
painting. 

She was married to Francis Witherspoon for 53 years before his passing on Jan 
25, 1990. Also preceding her in death were her parents; siblings, John Leach, 
Ella Leach, Nina Clark, Frederick Leach, Lyle Leach, and Barbara Gubbins.

Surviving are her son, Lyle (Shawn) Witherspoon of Lansing; daughter, Saundra 
(William) Evans of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Michael (Kirsten) Evans and 
Christine (Dean) Richard; four great grandchildren, Sabrina, Holly, Meghan, and 
Sophie; sisters, Faye (Norm) Lewis, Freda Ivy, and Betty Robishaw; several 
nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the 
Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Homes, 220 Rich St., Ionia, with Pastor Larry Brown, 
officiating. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Ionia. The 
family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
