He was a former Ionia resident. Mr. Witzel had been in ill health for two years and for two months in the hospital. He was born in Ionia, January 8, 1879, son of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Witzel, and went to Grand Rapids to live about 20 years ago. Before he became connected with the P.M. railroad Mr. Witzel had been in business in Grand Rapids. He was an active member of the Grand Rapids chapter of Brotherhood of railroad trainman and held membership in the Elks. He is survived by a son Melvin; three brothers, Henry and Godlup, of Ionia, and Alfred, of Montpelier, O., one sister, Mrs. Barbara Musser of Ontario, and three grandchildren. Mrs. Witzel died about three years ago. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Boynton funeral chapel with Rev. F. J. Fitch, pastor of the Ionia Baptist church officiating. Interment will be at Highland Park cemetery. ----- Funeral services for Fred Witzel, who died at St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Rapids, Saturday, December 28, were held Tuesday afternoon, December 31, at 2 o’clock at the Boynton funeral chapel, with Rev. F. J. Fitch, officiating and interment at the family lot at Highland Park cemetery. Bearers for the services were Joseph Weizorek, Harry Woodard, Lawrence Witzel and George Witzel. Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mrs. Ray Colwell sang. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers of Grand Rapids were represented by Willard Nichols, Hayten Campbell, Harry Woodard, Joseph Weizorek, Millard Irving, Lawrence Allen, Lee Alvord and Charles McGrath. Relatives and frends attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Witzel, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Campbell, Mrs. George Weizorek, Mrs. James Weizorek, Neil Blanchard, Rudolph Fick and Mr. Alling, of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Witzel, of Montpelior, O.; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wilson and Josephine and Lloyd Wilson, of Sheridan; Mr. and Mrs. Moses Nichols, of Grand Rapids.
