Feb. 7, 2012 Basil Wayne Wolever, 82, of Orleans, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, pastor and mentor to so many, was born in 1929 and entered into the presence of his Lord on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was always the spontaneous leader, ready to trek to the corners of a day's travel, always enjoying the journey as much as the destination. Basil was an avid outdoorsman who taught respect for nature and love of the outdoors to his five surviving children as well as any grandchild or neighborhood kid who wanted to tag along on his many journeys. Basil could most often be found with youngsters in tow, fishing or giving wagon rides. He spent nearly all of his adult life preaching the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ in a youth camp that he founded as a pastor of numerous churches. We are comforted by the life he led and in knowing his final destination. Basil is survived by his loving wife of more than 55 years, Nellie Ruth (Chaney) Wolever; a sister, Letha Hastings; his children Albert (Sally), Daniel (Kathy), Brenda (Kenichi) Trevan, Becky (David) Baker, and Basil Jr. (Randie); 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, countless nieces and nephews; a son adopted in Christ, Jose Mares; close friend Ray Cahoon and lifelong friends Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Tobias. Basil was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Sarah Louise; an infant son, Albert; his parents, Charles and Vera Wolever, his parents-in-law, Duncan and Louise Chaney; brothers, Leron, Wayton, Bruce, Stanley, Donald, DeOrn, Theron and Dorwin; a sister, Velda and grandchildren, Eric and Paxton. Although we are saddened by earthly passing, we look forward to a joyous eternal reunion. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge St. Belding. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Richard McLane officiating. Those wishing to express their sympathy are welcomed to consider a contribution in Basil's memory to the activities fund at Metron of Belding Nursing Home. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. For additional information, please contact Verdun Family Funeral Home at (616)794-1300 or verdunfh.com.
