Ionia Sentinel-Standard - Tues. Sept. 9, 2008

Donald W. Wolfet, of Ionia, age 79, passed away on Sept. 7, 2008.

He was born on Oct. 28, 1928 in Ionia the son of Leslie and Mildred (Merritt) 
Wolfert. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1948. He worked 27 years in 
Recreation at Ionia State Hospital and 4 years at Riverside Correctional 
Facility, retiring in 1981. He was well known in Ionia County for 27 years as a 
sports official for football, basketball and baseball. He was an Elk for 42 
years and Moose member for 22 years. He was active in the AARP and SERA 
retirement associations. He was an avid golfer and fan of all sports. He 
married Lois Anslow in 1948 and they had three children: Leslie Magee of 
Florida, Carol Mason of Denver and Janice Laye of Gardiner, Montana. They 
divorced and he married Alice Wertz of Ionia. They had two children: Tamara 
Griffith of Orleans and Dale of Ionia. Their marriage also dissolved. In 1969 
he married Sheila Reed of Ionia.

Besides his children, he also leaves behind 4 grandchildren; 7 great-
grandchildren; sister, Melba Fitts of Charleston, S.C.; his wife’s children and 
grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie in 1934 and mother Mildred 
Kelley in 1990. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 
2008 at the First Christian Church of Ionia. The family will receive friends at 
the church on Friday from 1-2 p.m. Interment will take place at Saranac 
Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the First 
Christian Church or Charity of One’s Choice of Ionia in memory of Mr. Donald W. 
Wolfert. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home,
