Bennett lib@dogsbark.com June 5, 2010, 3:37 am Ionia Sentinel Standard WOLVERTON, LESTER: SENTINEL-STANDARD, IONIA, MI, ca 1984: LESTER R. WOLVERTON, 90, a lifelong Ionia area resident, died Wednesday morning at Gibson Community Hospital, Gibson City, IL. He was a farmer in Orange Township until his retirement in 1972 when he and his wife moved to 344 Caroline, Ionia. A long-time member of the Farm Bureau, he served as the first president of the LeValley Farm Bureau group. He served as director of the Steele rural school, as supervisor of Orange Township, and was a director of the Federal Land Bank Association, Ionia branch, for 32 years. Born April 4, 1894, in Orange Township, he was the son of Elmer S. and Agnes Miller Wolverton. He attended rural school and attended Ionia High School and Ferris State College. A lifetime member of LeValley United Methodist Church, he was also a member of the Ionia Elks Lodge and Ionia Senior Citizens. He was married to the former Ella Martens on Aug. 22, 1918, in Anchor, IL. They observed their 66th wedding anniversary last year. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Robert M. Wolverton of Ionia and Richard E. Wolverton of Lake Odessa; two daughters, Corinne Brown of Gibson City, IL, and Carol Winton of Warren; 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine C. Wolverton, and a sister, Corinne Goodwin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at LeValley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Willis Braun officiating. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery. The family will be at Leddick Funeral Home Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial has been established for the LeValley United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home."
