O. Scott Wood died at 2 o’clock on Sunday morning, not entirely unexpected, for life had been hanging by the merest thread for the several preceding days. Mr. Wood had been a semi-invalid for about a year, and a month ago his condition became serious, and he remained at home, performing his directory work from there, but with characteristic pluck he braved the severe weather a day or two week before last, and spent a portion of the time at his desk in the Electric office, and while the effort perhaps did not hasten death, there was an apparent relapse, and he grew steadily weaker. O. Scott Wood was born in Muskegon county, Michigan, in 1850. He came to Ionia from Paw Paw, Mich., while yet a mere boy, and in 1870, under the age of 20 years, he became a member of the dry goods firm of Cooper, Wilson & Wood, which firm succeeded Cooper & Northrop, for whom he clerked. Upon the retirement of this firm from business, in the days when lumbering was the one big industry in this section, he went to Sheridan, where he conducted a general store for a time, but in three years returned to Ionia, which city has been his home town continuously since. For the fifteen years last past he has been the directing head of the Ionia Electric and Water Power Company, following the reorganization by Hon. H.R. Wagar, beginning his career with the company as book-keeper, and finally becoming the managing head of the large concern, which has developed into a profitable business as well as a business of considerable magnitude. He was a business man of keen and even judgment, and backed it with a confidence which was indomitable and unwavering, and in his every relation he was possessed of the best ethical ideas. The sole surviving member of the family is the wife, whom he married in 1873 as Clara E. Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis D. Smith, their only child, a son, having died some years ago in his ‘teens. Deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternities, a Knight Templar and a Shriner, and was also an Elk. Funeral services on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, at the late home, 236 East Washington street, Rev. A.R. Mitchell officiating, assisted by Rev. Cyrus Mendenhall. The remains will be placed in the Wagar mausoleum in Highland Park. Friends are asked to please omit flowers.
