Wood, 81, of Greenville, died Monday, February 2, 2004 at Metron of Belding. He was born in Grand Rapids on August 10, 1922, the son of Bernie and Lena Stratton Wood. He married Maxine L. Gender in Greenville on April 27, 1946. Jay was a graduate of Greenville High School class of 1940. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, where he obtained the rank of sergeant and was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with the Bronze Star. He was employed at Gibson Refrigerator Co. for 38 hears, working at both the Greenville and Belding plants as a supervisor, and was a member of Lester J. Sitts VFW Post of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his sister, Aletha Purdy; and brother, Arnold Wood. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maxine; sons and families, Robert Wood, Jack and Gay Wood, all of Greenville, Gary and Pam Wood of Gowen; grandchildren, Deanne Sweirez, Christopher Wood, both of Grayling, Angie and Glenn Adams of Trufant, Susan and Joe Nichols of Belding, Jessica Wood of Novi, Marcus Wood of Greenville; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Chandler, Krystalyn, Glenn III, Alison, Zachry, Matt; brother, Bernard and Virginia Wood, sister-in- law, Mary Ellen Wood, all of Greenville; brother-in-law, Oren Purdy of Kalkaska; his wife’s brothers, Dale Gender, Bruce Gender of Gowen, Donald Gender of Greenville; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Rev. Dr. Harry R. Johnson officiating. Burial is in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Michigan or the Alzheimer’s Association.
