Robert was born May 14, 1915, in Belding, the son of William and Nell Wood. He graduated from the Belding High School with the class of 1933 and was senior class president. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific. For many years he owned Wood’s Men’s and Boys Wear, an icon of Belding’s Main Street. He was a past member of the Belding Lions Club, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, Belding VFW Post 4406 and the American Legion Post 203 of Belding. Bob also was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was baptized, confirmed, married and will have his mass of Christian burial celebrated. Bob was also a talented and accomplished artist who did many wonderful drawings during his life and enjoyed his membership in the Belding Arts Club. He was an avid stamp collector. Bob was a wonderfully creative and colorful husband, father and grandfather; he was blessed with a real creative spirit in both his art, his outlook on life and his hilarious dry wit. In true Bob Wood fashion he wrote his own tongue in cheek obituary, it began, “coincidentally I was born on my birthday, May 14, 1915.” He had a lifelong love of family, hiking and nature. God only made one Robert Wood. He was married on Sept. 30, 1948, in Belding to Janet Kohn and they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. Janet survives along with their children, Tom and Deborah Wood of Grand Rapids, Beth and David Mahar of Dowagiac, Chris and Terry Gavitt of Belding, Jana Wood of Grand Rapids, Bob Jr. and Stacey Wood of Memphis, Tenn., Mike and Angie Wood of Belding; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Rosemary Wood of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill Wood Jr., Tommy Wood; and one son, Tim Wood. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Fr. Fred Brucker Presiding. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with a Rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the ALS of West Michigan or a charity that supports conservation and wildlife.
