Lake Odessa residents will be pained to learn of the death of James F. Wood, formerly of this place and at the time of his death a resident of Utica,N.Y. The following is the account as given in a Clinton,N.Y. paper: "Many hearts in Clinton and in other places where he had lived and labored will be stricken by sincere sorrow at the news of the death of James F.Wood of Utica, and formerly for a time a resident of Clinton. Mr. Wood, who was in charge of the ice harvesting preparations for the Utica Ice CO., of which his brother, George L.wood, is the general manager, was returning from the reservoirs some two miles or more distance, Monday evening with several of his men, including his nephew, George C.Wood. They were riding standing up in a heavy lumber wagon when a sudden lurch of the wagon, owing to the deep ruts in the frozen road, threw Mr.Wood and his nephew out of the wagon. Mr.Wood fell between the wheels, which passed over his chest, literally crushing his body and tearing the vital organs from their places thus causing injuries from which he died at the hospital a few hours later. The deceased was born in Whitestown in 1867 and was in his 39th year. He worked on his mother's farm until about twenty years of age, when he went to South Dakota, where he was married and took up several sections of land. He returned to Utica about twelve years ago and was employed by his brother, George L.Wood, in the ice business, for several years. He then went to Lake Odessa, where he lived a little over two years, engaging in the coal, wood and ice business. Two years ago last Fall he came East again and spent the winter in Clinton. At that time he was engaged with others in a prospective electric light enterprise. A year ago last summer he again accepted a situation with his brother as foreman in the ice business, in which position he was making a marked success when the fatality overtook him. He was a man who was possessed of many winning qualities including indomitable pluck and energy and much ingenuity. He was bright and active and made friends and acquaintances readily" Mr.Wood was a member of the local lodge F & A.M., and won many friends while a resident of this village, who unite in sympathy for the bereaved family. Mrs.Wood is remembered as a pleasant and sociable lady and a talented singer.
