Woodbury, Civil war veteran and highly esteemed pioneer resident of Portland, passed away shortly before noon Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at the residence, Friday afternoon, in charge of Rev. J. H. Bancroft. Although Mr. Woodbury had not been in the best of health for some time, having suffered an injury from being kicked by a horse two years ago which rendered his left arm helpless, the announcement of his death came as a distinct shock to his many friends in this vicinity. For the past two weeks he had not been feeling as well as usual but was able to be up and around. Tuesday forenoon he was out walking around on the lawn with Mrs. Woodbury when he complained of feeling cold, saying he thought he had better go in the house and put on some warmer clothing. As he was removing his shoes preparatory to putting on heavier underclothing, a look of distress came over his face and he requested Mrs. Woodbury to call a doctor immediately. She hurried to the telephone to obey his command and when she returned to the bedroom he was lying back on the bed and passed away a moment later. Mr. Woodbury was born in Rochester, New York, 80 years ago last October. When 26 years of age he was united in marriage to Miss Edna Newton. He was a veteran of the Civil War, coming to Portland several years after the end of that conflict, settling on the farm now owned by Dell Densmore. After residing there about 20 years he traded that place for the farm now occupied by E. J. Shepard. Six years ago he gave up farming and moved to Portland. He always took a keen interest in public affairs, serving Portland township as supervisor for several terms. Aside from the widow the only near living relative is a nephew, Chester D. Woodbury of Lansing,. His brother, Rastus Woodbury, passed away about one year ago.
