She was born Ruth Frances Kelly on November 12, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Hugh and Grace (Hagerty) Kelly, granddaughter of Terrance and Mary (Fisk) Kelly and John and Sarah (McLaughlin) Hagerty. She had a delightful childhood with loving parents, doting aunts and uncles and two older brothers, Richard and Robert. After graduation from St. Agnes School, she attended Mt. Notre Dame Academy and moved to Ionia in the late 1930s. She graduated from SS. Peter & Paul Academy in 1941 and attended the University of Grand Rapids. She spent many years working at Auto Owners Insurance in Detroit before marrying Edward Robert Woodcock in 1950 and became a housewife. Charter members of Christ the Good Shepard in Lincoln Park, they were blessed with eight children. Widowed in 1969, Ruth moved her young family and raised them in McBride where she was an active member of St. Margaret Mary's in Edmore since 1970. After her children were grown and educated, Ruth returned to college and earned her college degree in 1988. A massive stroke in 1995 caused her to slow down from her hobbies of taking care of her garden and lectoring at mass. She still enjoyed Scrabble, Rummy, reading, painting, arranging flowers, preparing delicious meals, and celebrating holidays. Ruth was a peaceful and thoughtful mother, filled with faith, patience, and kindness. Her sparkling eyes and beautiful smile filled our hears with everlasting love and joy. She will be sadly missed by her children, Nancy, Bob (Deb), Dan (Pam), Sandy, Mike (Vicki), Steve (Laurie), Patrick Woodcock, and Suzanne (Bill) Rosenburg; her grandchildren, Bobbie, Jim, Jason, Dan, Melissa, Erica, Christina, Mark, Lisa, Ben, Ellen, Ted, Tim, Adam, Anne, and Andy; her great-grandchildren, Kallie and Jason. She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh in 1951; mother, Grace in 1959; brother, Bob in 1961; her husband, Edward in 1969; brother, Richard in 1993; and her special grandson, Joey in 2001. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Melvin Fox, Pastor, at 1 p.m. today at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ionia. Rite of committal will be Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Ionia. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until service time. The family also received friends Monday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia. The rosary was prayed Monday evening. For those wishing memorial contributions may be made to SS. Peter & Paul Educational Trust Fund in memory of Mrs. Woodcock.
