G.A.R. VETERAN PASSES AWAY AT GD. RAPIDS HOME
Wm. Woods Reaches Ripe Old Age of 88 Though In Ill Health Lately

William A. Woods, 88, civil war veteran died at the Soldier’s home at Grand 
Rapids last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.  He was taken to the home about 
two months ago when it was found his health was failing and has declined 
steadily ever since.

The body was brought to Ionia and funeral services were held from the Bradley 
Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon.  Rev. F. J. Fitch officiated and 
interment took place in Highland Park mausoleum where the remains will stay 
until spring after which they will be buried.

Mr. Woods was one of the few remaining members of the William H. Borden post, 
G. A. R. in this city.  Before he went to Grand Rapids he attended every 
gathering that his failing health would allow him to reach.  Mr. and Mrs. 
Woods occupied their home on Lafayette Street for nearly 50 years and 
celebrated their golden wedding there July 4, 1924.

Mr. Woods enlisted in Co. K. 128th Ohio infantry, December 17, 1863, and was 
mustered out of the service July 13, 1865.  During the time that he had 
resided in Ionia Mr. Woods was one of the most loyal members of the William H. 
Borden Post G. A. R. and always took an active part in its functions.  He had 
served it as an officer for many years.  He was also a tireless worker in 
Lucullus Lodge, Knights of Pythias, which he served faithfully and was 
affiliated with the Ionia Elks.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lulu Bodle of Columbus City.
