Jan. 31, 1901 George Wood Sr. died at his residence in the first ward, last Thursday, the cause of this death being an abcess in the stomach, which broke and poisoned the whole system. The funeral services were held Sunday, Rev. A. O. Carman of the M. E. Church officiating. George Wood sr. was born in Nottingham, England, Aug. 1, 1829, and died at his home in Belding January 24, 1901, aged 71 years, five months and 23 days. He came to America with his parents when an infant and they settled in the state of New York, where he was brought up. He was united in marriage with Emmaretta A. Banks, in Conn., in 1869. They came to Michigan, about 1973 and lived in Ionia. They came to Belding about ten years ago, where he has resided ever since. Death came into his home some years ago and took away an infant son. The wife and mother passed from this life nearly three years ago. He has been in poor health for about four years but for the last few months he has improved, making his death very unexpected. He leaves three children to mourn the loss of a kind father; William H. who resides in Sheridan, George jr. of Belding and Mrs. Eva Dougherty of Odanah, Wisconsin. He was of a quiet retiring nature, greatly devoted to his home and respected by all who knew him.
