Died, at Pewamo, Ionia county, Michigan, December 27th, of Pulmonary Consumption, George T. Woodworth, Esq., of this village, in the 26th year of his age. Our village is saddened by the intelligence which reached us on Thursday evening, by express, of the death of Mr. George T. Woodworth, Editor and Proprietor of this paper. His decease occurred at the residence of Mr. Wm. H. Woodworth, his brother, at Pewamo, Ionia County, on Wednesday evening, the 27th inst. Mr. Woodworth came here from Concord, N.H., having been employed in the office of the New Hampshire Statesman some six years previous to his becoming a resident of our village, in the year 1857. He purchased the office of the Independent in the Spring of 1858. His uniform deportment, dignified and gentlemanly bearing, brought him the respect of all who knew him. While his sterling integrity and spotless character made warm friends of all who were more intimately acquainted with him. His untiring industry, unremitted even when he had nearly lost the ability to speak audibly, we fear, hastened on the sad event which it is our painful duty to chronicle this morning. Our whole community feel that we have met with no ordinary loss. We have hoped that his life might still be spared to us; but, that most insidious disease, Pulmonary Consumption, of which he died, often flatters most when about to do its worst work. He leaves an almost heart-broken wife, with whom all our citizen sympathize, and an infant child, to mourn his irreparable loss. Rev. C. Spooner, of this place, conducted the funeral services, at the residence of the brother of the deceased. For a few days past he failed rapidly in strength. On Wednesday last, about ten o’clock, there was a marked change in him, which manifested itself chiefly in increased difficulty in breathing. His physician was called in, and upon examination of the suffering man, he told his sorrow-stricken friends that there was no hope for him. When informed of the opinion of the Doctor he expressed himself, as he had done before, perfectly willing to submit to the will of his Heavenly Father, in whom he put his whole trust. About 9 o’clock in the evening he seemed to lose his consciousness, in a measure, and his breathing became more difficult until 11 o’clock, when it grew fainter and fainter, and at half-past 11 o’clock a slight compression of the muscles about the mouth and the death rattle in his throat told that his spirit was released from its earthly tenement. Mr. Woodworth was an honored and consistent member of the Congregational Church of this village.
