Mr. Wortley was born on November 9, 1856, in England and came with his parents to America at the age of three years, coming in a sailing vessel that took six weeks to make the journey. The family settled in Michigan near Jackson and he, when a young man, bought a farm in Campbell township and later on in Carlton township. In 1880 he married Miss Elizabeth Lepard and to this union nine children were born, William, Walter E., Ruth, now Mrs. Ernest Cunningham, Etta, Mrs. Charles Darby, Mary, Mrs. Carlton M. Campbell, Glendora, Ms. Cleo Sears, Lelah, Mrs. L. Lundberg of Flint, and Howard and Gladys, now deceased. The family came to Lake Odessa in the spring of 1919 where they have made many friends. They are members of the Congregational church where the funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2. Besides the widow and the children there are 19 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren. Mr. Wortley was one of the grand old men of Lake Odessa always having a smile for all he met and always grateful for the many kindnesses of his children and grandchildren who were always so thoughtful of these fine people.
