Ionia Sentinel Standard, 7 May 1931

Frank Wortman, 69, was found asphyxiated in the living room of his home, 327 
West Washington St., about noon Thursday, by Irvin McCusker, a roomer in the 
Wortman home, when he returned to the home from work.  Mr. Wortman was seated 
on a day bed, and gas jets in the room were turned on.  The room was gas 
filled, and clothing had been stuffed under a door which connected the room 
with other parts of the house.  Mr. Wortman had been dead about two hours when 
found it was thought.

Coroner B. J. Boynton and Sheriff Wm. Franch were called to investigate the 
death, the second of the kind within a week.  Following the investigation 
Coroner Boynton said he probably would not conduct an inquest, attributing Mr. 
Wortman’s death to suicide.

Mr. Wortman had been in ill health for some time, having suffered a stroke 
about a year ago.  He had brooded much over the condition of his health.

He is survived by the widow and one daughter, Audrey, a student in the Ionia 
high school.  Mrs. Wortman was employed away from home.

Mr. Wortman had been a resident of Ionia county for more than 60 years with the 
exception of three or four years when he resided in the state of Oregon.  Until 
he moved to Ionia he had lived on a farm in Easton township, north of the 
Community church.  This farm he still owned.  He was born near Penn Yan, New 
York, and was about six years of age when he came with his parents to Ionia 
county.

The funeral services will be held from the home 327 West Washington street, 
Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. F. W. Frye, and at the Palo Methodist 
Episcopal church at 3 o’clock.  Interment will be in Palo cemetery.
