The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Saturday, May 24, 1930
Mrs. Lydia Wortman, a resident of Ionia county for nearly 60 years, died at 
her home here Saturday morning following several weeks’ sickness.  Funeral 
services will be held from the home, 931 West Main street, Monday afternoon at 
2 o’clock, and interment will take place in Palo cemetery by the side of her 
husband, Charles W. Wortman, who died two years ago.  Rev. W. F. Kendrick will 
be in charge of the services.

Mrs. Wortman was born in Red Wing, Minn., December 26, 1857, and came to the 
vicinity of Palo to live when a child, living there until 21 years ago when 
the family moved to Ionia, as Mr. Wortman became employed at the reformatory.

Five children, Fred and Bernice of Ionia; Nellie, of Tacoma, Wash.; Harry, of 
Olympia, Wash., and Clifford of Detroit, survive.

The house at 931 West Main street, which had been the home of Mrs. Lydia 
Wortman since coming to Ionia about 20 years ago from Palo, was filled with 
friends Monday afternoon for her funeral services which were conducted by Dr. 
W. P. Kendrick, her pastor, whose kindly words recalled the lovely character 
her friends had known through a long and noble life.

Friends and relatives brought freely of lovely flowers which covered the 
casket and made a beautiful, rich profusion of bloom in the Palo cemetery, 
where the interment took place, by the side of her husband, the late Charles 
E. Wortman.

Neighbors who had been attracted by the charming personality of Mrs. Wortman 
were called upon to act as bearers.  These were Fred H. VanderHeyden, Emil 
Lange, Guy Conner, and Charles F. Donner.
