She was born in Palo, April 21, 1881, the daughter of Charles E. and Lydia Wortman and was a graduate of Ionia high school and the University of Michigan. She was head nurse in the surgical department of the women’s ward at University hospital in Ann Arbor for nine years and was an office nurse for 13 years for the late Doctors F. M. Marsh and John J. McCann. Miss Wortman, who had been ill since 1953 resided in her present home for the last 50 years. She was a member of the First Methodist church of Ionia and an honorary member of the State Association of Registered Nurses. Surviving are one sister, Miss Nellie L. Wortman of Ionia; one brother, Clifford of Detroit; one nephew, John Wortman of Northville; two nieces of Tacoma and Olympia, Wash. A memorial fund will be established. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, July 17 at 4 o’clock at the Boynton funeral home. The Rev. F. G. Dunbar of Grand Rapids will officiate and interment will be in the family lot in the Palo cemetery. ----- Funeral services for Miss Bernice Wortman, 75, late of 931 West Main street, who died Saturday afternoon, July 14 at about one o’clock at the Ionia County memorial hospital, were held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Boynton funeral home. The Rev. F. G. Dunbar of Grand Rapids officiated and interment was in the Palo cemetery. Active bearers were Richard H. Dodes, Viggo Nielsen, Hugh Howorth, Roy Weber, Chandler Haight, Sr. and John Toutenhoofd. Fifteen registered nurses, all of Ionia were honored bearers. Miss Wortman was an honorary member of the State Association of Registered Nurses. Relatives attending from out of town were Clifford Wortman of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. John Wortman of Northville, Mrs. Alma Wilder of Mt. Clemens and Mrs. Lucill Wortman of Greenville.
