Memorial services will be held later in Safford, Ariz. Dr. Donald Wright Dr. Donald Wright, 94, of Safford, Ariz., formerly of Portland, died April 4, 2009, Donald lived many years in Portland as a veterinary doctor. He was active in community affairs and in the Congregational Church where he held many board positions and was a choir member. He also designed and built the sound chamber for the organ. Donald and Elmere valued the historical events of Portland and the need to preserve them. They had a memorial monument placed on the north side of west Bridge Street near Potters Park to designate the birthplace of the author Clarence Buddington Kelland. In the thirties and forties the young people of Portland were grateful for the skating rink on the bayou with a shelter. This facility was initiated and fostered by Dr. Wright. During World War II, as an Army captain, he served in Asia as a veterinarian doctor for the mules and horses of the Mountaineering Regiment employed in pushing through the Burma Road. In the beginning of their retirement years, the Wright’s spent summers in Portland and winters in Arizona in self designed slab wall solar heated homes. In the summer of 1993, Dr. Wright assisted in the supervision and construction of the church parking lot and the ramp handicap access. His love of Portland motivated the need to verify the town’s history with solid proof. He did this again in 2007 in his visit to Portland by cooperating in writing up historical facts and financing the production of metal plaques that were attached to boulders at three locations along the river trail. The Wright’s also donated the diagrams of showcase in Portland library. He was preceded in death by Elmere, his loving wife of 61 years. Surviving are his sister, Mary Phillips, children, Rebecca Aaron and Charles and six grandchildren.
