Ionia Sentinel, 19 Dec 1873

In this city, on Thursday, Dec. 4th, 1873, Manie J., wife of Gilbert S. Yates; 
aged 33 years, 1 month and 1 day.

While the heart broken husband grieves at the loss of his dear and young 
companion – and the two motherless little girls weep that “Mamma” does not 
return – the whole community mourns at the thought that “Manie” is taken from 
our midst.

She had been long and favorably known in this community, and her bright face 
and cheerful manners, always brought sunshine and gladness wherever she might 
be.  The great concourse of friends who attended her obsequies, was a sure 
testimonial that she lived in the hearts of the people.  And while we drop the 
sympathizing tear with the bereaved family and long to again enjoy her society, 
we will also think that “Manie” has entered that sweet and peaceful rest, which 
awaits those who love and serve the Savior, and calmly awaits His coming.
