Ionia Daily Standard, 17 & 18 Apr 1899

Mrs. Jane M. Yates died this afternoon at 8 o’clock, at the home of her 
daughter, Mrs. O. M. Benedict, on North Pleasant street, at the ripe age of 83 
years.  With this death there passed away one who for more than sixty long 
years added the impress of a pure and womanly life upon the development of this 
community.  The Standard will endeavor to speak more at length of deceased in a 
subsequent issue.

A Pioneer Settler and Good Woman Gone.

The death of Mrs. Jane M. Yates is the passing away of one more of the few 
remaining pioneers of this county.  She came with her husband, Job S. Yates, to 
Ionia, in 1835, they having been married the same year in Skaneateles, New 
York.  The located in Ronald township, then an unbroken wilderness, and spent 
many years there in clearing up a large farm, removing to the city of Ionia in 
1868, where her husband entered into the agricultural implement business with 
G. A. Willett, under the firm name of Willett & Yates.  Mr. Yates died in 
1891.  For many years she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Benedict, 
where in the long years of her blindness she has had every attention that 
kindness and love could bestow, not only by Mrs. Benedict, but by Mr. and Mrs. 
Gilbert Yates and Mrs. G. A. Willett.

She was born in 1816, in Skaneateles, New York, and was the mother of five 
children.  Herbert died in early manhood, and a daughter, Frances, died at the 
age of three years, the three surviving children being mentioned above.  The 
funeral services will be held from the residence of Mrs. Benedict, Wednesday, 
at 10 a.m.
