He was married to Jane M. Sessions, sister of the late Alonzo Sessions, Aug. 13, 1835, and immediately moved to Ionia, locating on a farm on Prairie creek, five miles north of this city. Unto this couple were born five children, three of whom are now living: Mrs. G. A. Willett, Gilbert S. Yates and Mrs. O. M. Benedict, all of this city. Mr. Yates lived upon the farm until 1867, when in company with G. A. Willett he carried on an agricultural implement business in this city for the years. Mr. Yates has always been highly esteemed as a man of the highest integrity and of good judgment, and has been intrusted with several local offices of trust and responsibility. He became a member of the Church of Christ in 1846, under the preaching of the late Isaac Errett, and was ever a faithful, consistent member, loved and respected by all, and served the church in the capacities of treasurer, deacon and for the past five as an elder. He was a familiar figure upon our streets, and he much delighted to meet his friends who shared the heat and burdens of pioneer days. He quietly passed away this morning at the advanced age of 79 years, and at his request will be laid to rest in the North Plains cemetery. The funeral will be held at his late residence, 441 Pleasant street, at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning.
