Mr. Yates had quietly observed the 57th anniversary July 18 of his employment with the State Savings bank of Ionia and its successor, the First Security bank. Last Friday, with his son, Lee VanAllen Yates, he went to Topinabee for a few days but they returned to his home here Monday. He became ill Tuesday, although he was not thought to be in a serious condition when he went to Grand Rapids to consult his physician. He failed to rally and his death came Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Boynton funeral home. The Rev. Geo. Rentschler of the First Presbyterian church will officiate, burial in Highland Park cemetery. Surviving Mr. Yates are two sons, G. Benton Yates of Livonia and Lee VanAllen Yates of Cleveland, Ohio who was spending his vacation here with his father; one brother, Dr. L. Wing Yates of Waukegan, Ill.; two grandsons, David Miles Yates and Lee Davis Yates, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Benton Yates and one granddaughter, Clay VanAllen Yates, daughter of Lee VanAllen Yates. Mr. Yates was born in Ionia July 23, 1883, the son of Gilbert S. and Hanna Wing Yates, pioneer settlers. He was married November 23, 1910 to Lucy C. Morse of Ionia. Mr. and Mrs. Yates made their home on Tower street until 1916 when they moved to 332 East Washington street, the present home. Mrs. Yates passed away August 27, 1951. He attended Ionia public schools until he went to work for Simpson and Peer in their dry goods store, soon thereafter joining the State Savings bank in 1900. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Ionia, an honorary life member of Ionia lodge No. 548 B.P.O.E. For many years he was active in his church serving as a member and director of the choir. He was one of the early members of the Ionia Country club and its secretary-treasurer for many years. He was active as a golfer, bowler, fisherman and tennis enthusiast. At the time of his death he was assistant vice-president of the First Security bank. April 19, 1952, Mr. Yates was honored by the bank at a testimonial dinner for the more than 50 years of devoted service to his work. Devoted to his family and friends, Mr. Yates was known for his calm and gentle manner and will be remembered for his many acts of kindness in his work and private life.
