The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Thursday, September 24, 1925
Mrs. Hannah Mary Yates, for 50 years a resident of Ionia, and one of its 
kindliest and best loved Christian women, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening 
at the home of her son, G. L. Yates, 332 East Washington street.  For the past 
three weeks Mrs. Yates had been ill following an attack of grip, but her 
condition had improved.  She was sitting up again and was considered on the 
road to recovery.  She was taken acutely ill about 5 o’clock Wednesday, but 
until a few minutes before her death such a sudden termination of her long and 
useful life was not looked for.  She had been at the home of her son since 
Monday.

Mrs. Yates was nearly 78 years of age, and was born in Greenfield, Saratoga 
county, N.Y.  There are surviving a daughter, Mrs. Frances Yates Williams, of 
Cleveland, O.; two sons, L. Wing Yates, of Waukegan, Ill., and G. L. Yates, of 
Ionia, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Sarah Hicks, of California.  A brother, D. C, 
Wing, of New York, and a sister, also of New York, are the only member s of 
her parents’ family that are  now living.  Her husband, G. S. Yates, died 
about a year and a half ago.

Mrs. Yates was a staunch church woman, always having been affiliated with the 
Presbyterian church, of which she as an active worker, in the church and 
church society circles, the type of true and devoted Christians whose lives 
leave the community in which they have lived the richer for their example.

The funeral services will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Yates 
Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
