The Ionia Daily Standard, Friday, October 20, 1899
Col. John B. Yates died this morning.  He belonged to the civil engineer corps 
which was engaged in the work of building the D & M road from Pontiac to Grand 
Haven, during which time he was a resident of Ionia for some time, and married 
a daughter of the late A. F. Bell.  His military title was acquired by service 
in the war of the Rebellion, as an officer of the First Mich. Engineers and 
Mechanics, for the duties of which his professional training well fitted him.

Two daughters are now residents of this city: Mrs. Hal H. Smith and Mrs. Ray 
Barnes, and he had here many personal friends less closely connected by family 
ties who will bear the news of his death with feelings of sadness.
