Yeomans dies at 77 Edwin R. Yeomans, 77, Ionia farmer, banker and descendant of a family which founded Ionia, died late Friday night at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids. He had been ill for three weeks. A lifelong resident of Easton Township, he was born in the family house on Haynor Road, and farmed lands that had been in his family since Erastus and Phoebe Yeomans came to what became Ionia on May 28, 1833, as members of the Samuel Dexter party. He served on the board of directors of Ionia County National Bank for nearly four decades, following his father on the bank board. His father was the first president of Ionia County National Bank after its reorganization in 1934. The son of Edwin S. and Ola Snell Yeomans, he was born Sept. 19, 1909, attended Ionia schools, and was graduated from Ionia High School with the Class of 1927. He attended Michigan State University and was graduated with a degree in agriculture, and a reserve commission in the U.S. Army, in 1931. He returned to the family farm – the oldest farm in the same family in Ionia County – after graduation and with his brother Gerald was active in the formation and operation of Yeomans Dairy farm from its establishment in 1936 until it was closed in 1958. Called to active duty in 1942, after the outbreak of World War II, he served for several months before being honorably discharged for medical reasons. He returned to family farm operations. Appointed to the board of directors of Ionia County National Bank Jan 8, 1946, he served as a director for 38 years until he retired Feb. 13, 1984. He continued active in farm operations, known as the Yeomans Egg Farm since 1958, until his recent illness. Gerald and Edwin were joined in farming by Edwin’s two sons, Sanford and Russell, in 1958. For many years, Yeomans served as president of the People’s Mutual Fire Insurance Co. of Ionia, prior to its merger, in 1968, with Pioneer Insurance Co. of Flint. A lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Ionia, he was also a lifetime member of Ionia County Fishing and Hunting Club, a past member of the American Jersey Cattle Club. He served as president of Ionia County Farm Bureau and was also a member of Ronald Grange and MSU Alumni. Yeomans was married to the former Elizabeth McKendry on March 14, 1935, and they made their home on the family farm all their married lives. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Sanford and Russell, both of Ionia; three grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald, of Ionia. A sister, Olive Sweet, preceded him in death in 1964. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Bovee officiating. Pallbearers will be Norman McKendry, Harold McKendry, James Yeomans, Kenneth Gauld, Franklin Tuttle, and Brent Gauld. Burial will be in Easton Cemetery. The family will be at the Rich Street Chapel of Montgomery Funeral Home Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial has been established for the First United Methodist Church of Ionia, in care of the funeral home.
