York, 56, of 742 Ethel avenue, S.E., Grand Rapids, passed away early Sunday morning at Butterworth hospital in that city after an illness of about six months. Mr. York was president of York & Co. in Grand Rapids, a concern which he organized about 25 years ago. He left Lake Odessa in 1912 and entered the employ of A.B. Knowlson company in Grand Rapids, wholesale dealers in coal. He became very well and favorably known to dealers over the state. He left this connection to establish his own business. Born in Portland, Mich., in 1885, his family moved to Lake Odessa where they resided until a short time after the death of his father, George B. York, in 1907. In 1906 he was united in marriage with Miss Pearl Bever of Lake Odessa. He is survived by the widow, two daughters, Mrs. LaVern Butler of Lowell, Mich., and Mrs. Robert Addison of Ludington, Mich., one son G. Bruce at home and two grandchildren. He was a member of the Lake Odessa Congregational church, and York lodge, F.&A.M. in Grand Rapids. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the Metcalf funeral home in Grand Rapids and interment was made in the family lot in Lakeside cemetery, Lake Odessa. Mr. York was well known in coal circles, with both retail dealers and mine operators. He also was prominent in the salt trade, selling his own brand of salt to dealers in six states. Many years ago he platted a section of the northeast lake shore property at Jordan lake here which subsequently became York’s addition to the Village of Lake Odessa. During the intervening years he has maintained a residence in this addition which he and Mrs. York and their family have occupied during the summer months. He also built the “lighthouse” now on property adjoining the municipal bathing beach. This unique structure is built in true lighthouse style. In consists of three separate floors and a beacon at the top. The development of this plat was a particular hobby of Mr. York’s and it was largely due to his efforts that this section along the lake shore was built up to its present desirability. In his young manhood Mr. York was quite an athlete and for several years Lake Odessa baseball teams were not considered hardly complete unless he was at the third base position.
