Henrietta E. Younger, who was laid to rest last Friday in Highland Park cemetery, was one of the few remaining pioneers who enjoyed the distinction of being among the first settlers of Ionia county. She came to Ionia in 1836 when there were only three houses here, and went with her husband to Ronald being the first white woman to sleep in that township. It was one of the joys of her life for this good old woman to relate the experience of her pioneer days of mingled hardships and happiness in the times when the Indians were her neighbors. During her first nights in Ronald she had to sleep under wagon boxes, until her husband could build a house for their occupancy. Mrs. Younger was born in 1815 in New York state, where she married George A. Younger, a native of Scotland. They came to Ionia in 1836. The husband died in 1859 on the farm they settled, and her last days were spent on the farm adjoining. Her maiden name was Henrietta Elizabeth Ellison. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Younger six children. The eldest, Jane died years ago. Harry is now a resident of Belding, Charles E. and William E. lived on the farm.
