YOUNGER KILLED AT PORT, AD LAST EVENING. Fell From a Passenger Train Into the Bridge, and Died an Hour Later. Jay W. Younger, aged 28, met with an injury at Portland, at about 9:15 last evening, which resulted in his death about an hour later. The most probable theory, as to the cause, is that the smoking car, in which he was pulling, being too warm for his comfort, he stepped to the door for fresh air, and being weak, he fell and rolled off the car. He evidently fell head first, and the back of his head struck on one of the sharp edges or corners of the ties, as the only injury he received was on the head, and the character of this wound indicated quite clearly that the head had come in forceful contact with some sharp timber. The fall was a force enough to puncture the cap he was wearing. There is nothing to indicate that he was at all struck by the cars. The accident occurred on the D. L. & N. Bridge, about ten feed from west end, and some eighty rods east of station. He was in poor health, and was enroute home from Ann Arbor, whither he went for medical advice and an examination. Conductor Frank Richmond had notices Younger's feebleness and apparent uneasiness, and had watched him more or less as he moved about and through the cars. Younger left the smoker and passed into the rear car, and after standing at the window of the rear door for a time, he retraced his steps, going to the forward end of the smoker, and thence out onto the car platform. Richmond missed Younger about this time, and instinctively fearing accident, pulled the bell rope and brought the train to a stop. The train was backed, only about twice it's length, and the injured man was found. He was put aboard the baggage car, and the train proceeded to the station. Medical aid was summoned but death came to his relief within an hour from the time of the fall. The accident occurring within the corporate limits of Portland, the body was left there. This morning a brother went thither and brought the remains to the city, whence they were conveyed to his late home on the Chambers farm in north Ionia township. He was unmarried, and will be remembered by many as the younger member of the farm of Younger brothers, _____ _____ _____ _____ _____. The funeral will be attended from his farm home, at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
