Bennett lib@dogsbark.com June 5, 2010, 3:39 am Ionia Sentinel Standard YOUNGS, JOHN, JR.: DAILY SENTINEL STANDARD, IONIA, MI, Saturday, August 1, 1942: "Deaths - JOHN YOUNGS, Jr., 74 year old life-long resident of Ionia and owner of a hardware store here for many years, was found dead at 8:30 Friday evening by his sister, Mrs. E. R. Bailey, at her home at 333 W. Washington street, where he had been staying for a week following a relapse from an illness he had been suffering for several months. Born March 10, 1868, in the Bailey home on Washington street, he and his brother, Fred, were proprietors of the Youngs hardware on West Main street following the death of John Youngs, sr., their father and founder of the business, in 1903, until a few years ago. Youngs was a member of the Ionia Elks, the Episcopal church, and attended the Ionia public schools. Surviving is one sister, Mrs Esther Bailey of Ionia. Two brothers, Fred and George, died in 1929 and 1899, respectively. His wife, Verona, suffered a stroke and died three years ago at their home at 409 West Washington street. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 4, at 2:30 at the Episcopal church with Rev. Henry A. Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Highland Park cemetery." IONIA COUNTY NEWS, MI, Thursday, August 6, 1942: "FORMER MERCHANT TAKEN BY DEATH - Funeral services were held Tuesday for John Youngs, Jr., 74, veteran Ionia hardware merchant, who died Saturday morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. E. R. Bailey. Services were held at 3:00 o'clock from the St. Johns Episcopal church with Rev. Henry Hansen officiating. Burial was in Highland Park cemetery. The sister, Mrs. Bailey, is the only immediate survivor as his wife, Verona, died three years ago."
