Mary was born Jan. 27, 1925, the daughter of Daniel and Olive Tice Rodd-Wyman in Mount Pleasant. She married Nicholas Zaleski on Feb. 13, 1943, in Mount Pleasant. She was a life member of both the Mark Daniels VFW Post 1735 Auxiliary and the Hubbardston American Legion Post 182 Auxiliary. She enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards and dancing. During Mary’s time as a business owner, she was loved by many people. She always had a smile on her face. Mary always said, “Smile and the world smiles with you, frown and you frown alone.” That was a rule she followed all her life. She made people want to come back to her business just to talk. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends alike. Mary was a granddaughter to David Rodd, chief of the Swan Creek Black River Tribe. She was a great-granddaughter to the infamous Charles H. Rodd. She always talked of her heritage and fought a 45-year battle with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribal Enrollment, but has lost that fight. Mary was never recognized by her own people. What a shame. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and five sisters. She is survived by her husband, Nicholas; six children, Isadora and Edward Prahl of Howard City, Merrie and Terry Gervin of Hubbardston, Nick Zaleski of Metairie, La., Corrine and Bob Cornish of Munising, Steve and Lynette Zaleski of Mount Pleasant, Tony and Annette Zaleski of Munising; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City.
