The Lake Odessa Wave, Thursday, January 11, 1940
Mrs. Catherine Zerfas, 76, pioneer of Byron township, Kent county, died Monday 
at Portland.  Surviving are five sons, Jacob and George, Lake Odessa, Peter at 
Burnips, John and Anthony in Portland; three daughters, Mrs. Emma Miller, 
Jamestown, Mrs. Minnie Brooks, Allegan, and Mrs. Helen Vorenkamp, Grand 
Rapids; three sisters, Mrs. Frieda McCauley, Chicago, Mrs. Josephine 
Buischemann, Chicago, and Mrs. Emma Halzgen, Byron Center, and 34 
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9 o’clock Friday at the home of Peter Zerfas 
in Burnips, and at 10 o’clock at St. Sebastian’s’ church at Byron Center.  
Burial will be in St. Sebastian’s cemetery.  

For some time Mrs. Zerfas as an invalid has lived in Lake Odessa.  Mrs. Aletha 
Rowland cared for her until she was taken to the home of a son at Portland 
where she died Monday.
