The excursion train east which was due to leave Portland at 10:25 struck a buggy containing Carl Ziggler of Ionia, smashing the buggy into kindling wood and so injuring the occupant that he died in about ten minutes. He was on his way to visit friends at Lyons. He was employed in J. L. Webber’s clothing store, was 21 years of age and unmarried. The engineer of the locomotive which killed the young man says he did not see the rig until it was right on the track and he had not time to reverse his engine. The horse seemed to be either running away or was being driven on a run to get across the track ahead of the train. The crossing where the accident took place is one of the most dangerous ones along the line and there have been many narrow escapes from death there. The railroad company sent a special engine and car to the scene of the accident and took the body back to Ionia. Ziggler is said to have been a fine young man and formerly worked in S. W. Webber store at Lyons. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/z/ziggler13096nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 1.8 Kb
