Zumsted, beloved husband, father and grandfather of St. Johns, passed away on March 4, 2011 after a valiant health struggle for 2 ½ years. He was born on Nov. 12, 1932 at Walter Nellar Hospital in Lansing to Avis (Russell) and Myron Zumsteg. Frederick retired from General Motors on March 1, 1993 after 32 years of service. After retirement he was owner/operator of Wedding Reflections, Ltd. For 12 years in downtown St. Johns. He was well-known for his musical bridal show productions. Through the years; he provided training opportunities for youth, both through the Bridal Industry, Knit & Purl and Soaring Unlimited, which included various facets of construction. Frederick was a community minded and active in the Jaycees in Ionia for many years. He served in the Korean Conflict and, after discharge from the Army, he was called up by the Navy to work on missiles for the Department of Defense. He will always be remembered as a man with a compassionate and generous heart, always putting others before himself. He married Barbara (Brown) Sluka on Sept. 1, 1995, who survives him along with her daughter, Julie Ann (Thomas) Sovereign and grandchildren Tommy and Gracie of St. Johns; his daughter, Lisa (Thomas) DeRonne and grandchildren Mathew, Christopher and Michael of Fenton; son Keith (Kathy Zumsteg and grandchildren keith, Jessica, James, Nathan and Brandon of Columbus, Ohio; and son Michael Zumsteg of Lyons and granddaughter Holly; sister Joyce Charles of Ionia; brother-in-law Daniel Brown and sisters-in-law Connie (Rus) Hilliker, all of Vernon, and Sally (Kevin) Spiegal of Morrice; eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a special young man, Jonathon Kelly. On July 31, 1960 he married Jacqueline Glavin, she preceded him in death in 1982. Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Durand, St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns or Capital Area Community Services Walk for Warmth. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 710 E. Columbia Drive, Durand, on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Poll officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon.
