LIST OF THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC (GAR) POSTS IN MICHIGAN: 1872-1948 December 10 1994 ************************************************************************ Introduction Copyright c1994 by the Huron Shores Genealogical Society. This booklet was prepared by the Huron Shores Genealogical Society (HSGS), c/o the Robert J Parks Public Library, 6010 N Skeel Ave, Oscoda MI 48750, 989-739-9581. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post records in Michigan are maintained by the Adjutant General of Michigan (now the Department of Military Affairs). After the GAR posts became inactive the records were transferred to the State of Michigan Archives, 717 W Allegan St, Lansing MI 30007. These records are now open to the public at the archives. They are also on microfilm and are available through any of the Mormon Church's Family History Centers. The GAR records available are of three types: (1) There were nearly 500 GAR Posts that existed between1872 to 1948. (2) The index to individual Civil War veterans show which GAR Post the veterans were a member of. (3) The quarterly post reports sent to the State Adjutant General, and some local miscellaneous records kept by the GAR posts themselves. The GAR post records. The highest membership was about 21,000 GAR members in 1893. These records are kept in folders filed in post number order, and include mostly the quarterly GAR reports sent to the Adjutant General each quarter by the posts. These quarterly reports include considerable biographical information on their members: Such as date and place of birth; sometimes date and place of death; military unit and dates served; disabilities incurred in the military; date joined the GAR and current residence and occupation; sometimes indicates where a member transferred to when he moved to another area, or where he transferred in from. These records are only available at the State Archives, 717 W Allegan St Box 30007, Lansing MI 48909, 517-373-1408. GAR Post Organization. Often the post numbers of GAR posts that disbanded, were reassigned to new posts being organized. Therefore, a GAR post number is not necessarily unique to a specific GAR post in a given town. Several posts were organized and then disbanded in a year or so. Some posts were organized and operated for several years and then disbanded, and in a few years they were reorganized again; some used the same post number and some used a new post number. Some posts started with a given post name, and changed the name once or twice after its beginning. Some posts were disbanded and the members joined a neighboring post. There were two colored posts. The format of this GAR Index from left to right is: (1) Post number, (2) Post name, (3) Post office address, (4) County the post is in, Michigan County codes used are the first three letters of the county: except GTE is Grand Traverse; GTT is Gratiot; KAK is Kalkaska; MAK is Mackinac; MTC is Montcalm; MTM is Montmorency; OSD is Oscoda; STC is St Clair; and STJ is St Joseph. (5) Date the post was organized, (6) Date the post was disbanded. Sequence of this GAR Index. Four sequences exist: Volume 1 is sequenced by GAR post number Volume 2 is sequenced by the GAR post name. Volume 3 is sequenced by the post office. Volume 4 is sequenced by county. Volume 5 contains addition information. A copy of this booklet is available for $15.00 if picked up, add $3.20 if mailed.
