INDEX TO POOR FARM INMATES, IOSCO COUNTY MICHIGAN: 1874-1893 *********************************************************************** June 15 1993 Introduction Copyright ?1993 by the Huron Shores Genealogical Society. This booklet was prepared by the Huron Shores Genealogical Society (HSGS), c/o the Robert J Parks Public Library, 6010 N Skeel Ave, Oscoda MI 48750, 989-739-9581. Iosco County on Jan 4 1871 purchased 320 acres for a Poor Farm on Spartan Rd, between Plank and Kobs roads (S 1/2 Sec 10 Tawas Township T22N/R7E). The first house used was on the SW corner of the farm, however it burned in October 1871, and they renovated the log house on the East end of the farm and moved in there. Jan 18 1874 they sold on contact all the pine timber on the farm. To obtain a farm manager, called Keeper of the Poor, the county solicited bids. The manager was paid $500 a year for the first few years. The weekly rate to be paid the keeper of the poor to keep the inmates was $3.75 for an adult, $3.00 for a child 3-10 years, $2.00 for a child less than 3 years, $1.00 for a child less than 3 years with its mother. The Keeper of the Poor was directed to furnish good wholesome food consisting of pork, potatoes, bread, onions, cabbage, tea, sugar, coffee, beans, butter, syrup, rice and to furnish fresh beef or mutton twice a week, and fresh beef or mutton soup twice a week on days fresh meat is not furnished. Meals were served at 7am, 12 noon and 5pm. In 1876, after some land had been cleared, the county solicited bids for someone to rent the farm and work it on shares, and take care of the inmates. The initial farm rent was $500.00 a year, the county got 1/4 of the crops. The weekly rate for keeping inmates remained the same. A cemetery was established on the Poor Farm, but the date it was established is unknown. It is located along Spartan Rd, and is 82.5 feet long E/W and 12 feet deep N/S, paralleling Spartan Road. It is centered about 120 rods west of the corner of Spartan and Kobs roads. It is still owned by Iosco County although the rest of the Poor Farm has been sold. Today, there are no tombstone or any fencing around the cemetery, or any records of the burials. On Mar 2 1921 120 acres was purchased in Tawas Township, and the poor farm moved to this location (W 120 acres of the SE 1/4 of Sec 20 Tawas Township T22N R7E). The 1930 plat book indicates the County Infirmary was located on the site, and consisted of 160 acres (SE 1/4 of Sec 20 Tawas Two T22N R7E). Also, in the 1930 plat book the old location of the poor farm is now privately owned. Apparently the Poor Farm or Infirmary closed sometime in the late 1930s, after the Social Security system came into being. Items included in the 1874-1893 Journal kept by the Keeper of the Poor are: a. the inmates name, b. age, sex, residence, c. date admitted, cause of pauperism, d. date discharged, cause of discharge, and notations if blind, mute, epileptic, idiotic, or insane. Codes used in this index are: * after the name indicates death/burial data; NG = data not given; wks = weeks; Pg.Line = page and line entry number in the original Journal; .25 = 1/4 of a year of age; Rcd# = computer record number, ignore this. It appears quite obvious that other Journals existed after 1893, however they have not been found. The original material is contained in a journal located in the Iosco County Register of Deeds Office in Tawas City Michigan. If you wish HSGS to research and abstract the information about a person named in the 1874-1893 journal, we charge $6.00 per hour plus any normal expenses. Please send your request and a $15.00 advance payment Order. Send your order, and a check payable to the Huron Shores Genealogical Society, to the Society address shown above.
