March 19. - Last Thanksgiving evening a carousal occurred at the village of Muir, about six miles from here, in which one Wm. Noringer was shot in the lungs by a certain saloon-keeper named Thomas. The wounded man came near dying, and for two weeks it was thought he would not recover. Noringer was arrested and the trial has ust occurred here, before Judge Lovell, of the Circuit Court. It was very ably managed by the Prosecuting Attorney, after two days' trial was sent to the jury, who were out one whole night. Naxt morning they brought in a verdict of manslaughter. (It is rather remarkabe that a mand should be convicted of manslaughter after the intended victim had recovered, ED I.O.) A jeweler by the name of Gillett, in the village of Belding, recently sold out to another man in that place. Next morning the goods were missing, and Gillett had left town. The telegraph was used and he was found at the depot in this city ready to go to Grand Rapids, and the stolen goods were found at the express office, marked for Grand Rapids. Gillett was arrested by the Sherriff and is now out on bail. David Eagle, one of the escaped convicts from the State House of Correction was captured at his home near Jackson and returned here. The escape has cost him seven more months of confinement.
