All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sarah Breidenstein slbreiden@aol.com March 14, 2012, 11:57 pm Jackson Citizen Patriot, March 22, 1923 DAVID LANE, 99, PIONEER OF THIS CITY, EXPIRES David Lane, 99 years old, a pioneer resident of Jackson county, and a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home, 622 Ellery avenue, Wednesday afternoon, about 5 o’clock. Mr. Lane was born March 4, 1824, in Binghamton, N.Y., and moved to Michigan, when a boy, taking up his residence in Sandstone. He was later married to a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zebah Crawford, pioneers. Mrs. Lane died in 1898. For a number of years Mr. Lane also resided on a farm near Gillett’s lake in Lioni township, but he was most widely known in Jackson, being for years hallmaster at the Michigan State Prison and employed at the prison farm. Mr. Lane enlisted in the Civil War as buglar when 38 years of age under Gen. W. H. Withington, and later, during the war was made company clerk. He was a member of Edward Pomeroy Post, G.A.R. In 1905 Mr. Lane compiled and published letters he had written home during the war, the book being entitled “A Soldier’s Diary.” A chapter was added to the book chich told of his arrival in Jackson after his discharge from the Army. In 1892 Mr. Lane’s health commenced to fail, but he took an active interest in his home duties. During the last six years he had been confined to his room, and was cared for by his granddaughter, Mrs. R. P. Rogers. There survive two daughters, Mrs. Jessie L. Jessou, of Lansing and Mrs Elsie A. King, of Walla Walla, Wash.; also a number of grandchildren. Two of the latter are residents of Jackson, Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. A. O. Reece. Among the grandsons there are abroad, Elmer Lane, foreign representative of the Remington Typewriter Company, living in France and Robert Lane, with the American Red Cross.
