He was the son of Thomas Jefferson Smith and Harriet Eliza Ingraham, both of New York. His family moved to Michigan about 1862, settling in Jackson Co., as farmers. Penninah Arsula Decker b:09 Oct 1853 Chelsea, Washtenaw, Michigan, d:27 Nov 1940, Onondaga Twp., Ingham, Michigan. Penninah was the daughter of Thomas S. Decker and Catherine. Her mother's maiden name is unknown. Catherine died when Penninah was very young and her father's second wife, Sarah Jane Flemming raised the children. Alfred and Penninah married 14 Feb 1882 in Eaton Co., Michigan. They had 7 children: Thomas June Smith; Mabel B Smith Horton; Lena Belle Maddux; Claude Henry Smith (buried beside his parents in this cemetery); Lorenzo Dell Smith (buried beside his parents in this cemetery); Loda A. Smith Wilkinson; Don L. Smith Additional Comments: NOTE: On most documents Penninah is spelled as such, but there are many variations. Also she was known as Arsulie...variation of her middle name of Arsula.
