Swarthout was a civil war veteran. Inscription is J. H. Swarthout, 6th Mich. Cav. Co. B. I came upon his headstone in the veteran's section of Mt. Evergreen Cemetary. Additional Comments: John was my g-grandfather. Enlisted in the war out of Wheatland, MI. Lived in Woodstock [Cement City] around 1870 before settling in Jackson in 1880. He passed away at his sister's house, in Horton, in 1901.
