Carpenter, one of the first settlers of the township of Alamo, died yesterday aged 90 years. He settled in that town in 1837 on the farm where he resided ever since and was a remarkable man in many respects. Although a small man in stature, he had a reputation for great physical endurance. He lived nine miles from Kalamazoo, yet he walked here week in and week out before seven o'clock in the morning and after doing a days work walked home again, in most cases carrying groceries or provisions on his back. there are few mem of to-day who could stand that kind of work. He was a very generous man and no one was ever turned away from his door hungry. A wife and eight children survive him, four girls and four boys, one girl and one boy having died. he lived with his wife, who is 84 years of age, sixty seven years. He was a soldier in the war of 1812 and a pensioner of the government. He was born in Rensalear County New York Jan 24, 1794 and at the time of death was 90 years, 2 months and 17 days old. The funeral will take place from the residence on the town line between Alamo and Cooper, nine miles north west of Kalamazoo, Sundy afternoon.
